In this weeks reading, Archetypes was the main focus. It looked at how there are many different types of archetypes within a hero. The different functions of archetypes are Higher Self Shape Shifter, Threshold Guardian, Trickster, Shadow, Herald, Allies and Mentor. Then the reading goes into depth about how we should expect a hero to be, things such as growth, action, character flaws and sacrifice. Also it talks about the differing types of mentor, such as dark, fallen, continuing, multiple and comic mentors within a hero.
Reaction
When i first read the word archetypes, i didn't understand exactly what it could mean but after going on to read how it looked at how different people came across and peoples traits I found i could relate it alot more to movies, and people in my own life. It also showed me that mentors could be so different and there is no single stereotype.
Reflection
This reading reminded me slightly about one of my favorite films, A Peaceful Warrior. This film was about a mentor who trained a young boy how to work his mind to his advantage, his demeanor was one that was an old wise man who had seen and experienced it all in life, but after reading this i thought that a mentor can be from any walk of life.
Questions
- Does any of the types in the reading sound like a mentor or hero in your own life?
- Did you realize that there was so many different types of mentors?
- I believe that everyone will have many different kinds of mentors and heros, who is your real life hero and why?
